Math and Science Journals

Hello all,
This year your child will be using journals in both math and science. Writing is an integral part of any curriculum and that is why these will be utilized in my classroom. Tonight your child is to do the following in their Science Journal:

Please write a letter to Mr. C reflecting on the Paper Airplane investigations. Tell Mr. C about the following things:
* What you learned
* What you liked and/or didn't like
* What you may have struggled with

In their Math Journal they are to do the following:
Put these numbers in order from least to greatest and then explain, in detail, how you did it.
4,543 4,453 5,443 4,345

Have a great evening!

Paper Airplanes and Math Races

Hello all,
By the time many of you read this, we will have already completed Parent night. It is my hope that it was both entertaining and informative. The first week is going well. I was REALLY pleased with the students work today. It took a little while to clear out some of those summer cobwebs, but we are starting to roll along. Math Races have been a success. Through math races we have already done mini-lessons on long division, exponents, decimals, multiplication, addition, subtraction, and order of operations. In science we have started our first inquiry project of the year. The students have worked together to build and observe paper airplanes. They then created questions based on those observations. They were then put into groups and the next step is to come up with a hypothesis and design an experiment to test their hypotheses. We will do several of these projects throughout the year. I hope that everyone has a wonderful weekend. Take care.

Mr. C

The Last Weekend of Summer

I would love to sit here and wax poetic about the romantic end to another glorious summer, but my summer wasn't too great (3 months of flood repairs and still out of our home), so I am going to look to the beginning of school for my joy and excitement. I am so very glad that school is starting again. I can't wait to meet your children, some for the first time, and get the ball rolling. We are going to have an awesome year. Last year was my first year in 4th grade and it went well, but I have been trying to fine tune things so that this year will be even better. Here are just some of the things your child has to look forward to this year:

* Football and Basketball Math
* Math Races
* Terrariums and Aquariums
* Rainforest Feast
* Harris Hillman
* Chattanooga Trip
* Paper Airplane Experiments
* Field Day
* And so much more!

This blog is intended to keep you somewhat up to date on the goings on in my math and science classroom. As the year progresses, I will be adding helpful links and videos that should enhance you and your child's fourth grade math and science experience. Please feel free to pass along this link to any friends or family that you think would like to keep up with what their niece, nephew, cousin, grandson, or granddaughter is doing in fourth grade. I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend and please tell your children that I am excited to see them on Monday.
